One of Hong Kong’s most beloved food items, siu mai dumplings are cheap and convenient snacks favoured by people on the go looking for a quick breakfast or other meal. They have long been taken for granted as part of the city’s food scene. But when outdoor dining and social gatherings were banned during the Covid-19 pandemic, many Hongkongers began to miss siu mai. Hoping to ensure the survival of the traditional treats, Andrew Wong Tsz-san co-founded the Hong Kong Siu Mai Concern Group in 2020. The group now has more than 160,000 social media followers and has given a major boost to at least one siu mai business.
